Abstract

The lack of a culture of evidence evaluation in the discipline of nutrition could have an impact when adopting effective interventions and fulfilling their health benefits. Nutrition research has been increasing, but its scientific quality has not, given that it is a discipline that has positioned itself more as an opinion than a science, finding statements and even prescriptions without a scientific basis and with conflicts of financial and non-financial interests. Informed decision making is an important component of quality health care. The objective of the symposium organized by REDCieN of the Mexican College of Dietitians, which took place within the activities of the AMMFEN National Congress 2024, was to offer a space to guide nutrition professionals and students in the adoption of an evidence-based practice. The symposium was made up of three conferences: a) Evidence-based practice, where the foundations were addressed and an appropriate use of said practice was promoted that goes beyond what a research study can conclude; b) Evaluation of the quality of scientific evidence, the different biases that must be analyzed in research studies were analyzed; and c) Tools for informed decision making, focused on showing current methodologies to facilitate the adoption of an evidence-based practice. For evidence-
based practice in nutrition, nutrition professionals must develop skills in efficient literature search, application of evidence evaluation rules, statistics, among others. A contribution from the Nutrition guild to science impacts an effective workforce in addressing the country's major health problems such as chronic-degenerative diseases whose main cause is poor nutrition.
